Germs!
This week during science time we have been learning about germs and how to keep ourselves healthy. Today we did an experiment involving germs. Each student applied a product called Germ Juice (www.germjuice.com) to our hands. It is a germ simulation, not actual germs. 😉 They were only able to see the “germs” under a black light. Then they washed their hands and checked under the black light again to see if the “germs” were removed when washing. An observation…if your hands still look like this after washing, you’re probably not washing well enough!

Homemade Butter
Today we made butter the way the Pilgrims would have had to make it. If you would like to try it at home, here are the steps.
First you will need heavy whipping cream that is room temperature, 3 clean marbles, a container with a good lid and some salt. Fill the container about 1/3 full with the cream and add the marbles. Now shake the container for a few minutes until you can feel that the butter has formed. The longer you shake, the creamier your butter will be. Open the lid and add just enough salt for taste. We ate ours on saltine crackers. Yum!
Here is a graph of how we liked our homemade butter:
3 States of Matter Experiment
We did an experiment to observe the 3 states of matter. Here is how to do the experiment at home:
1. Put a piece of ice in a snack size baggie. This is the solid state of matter.
2. Take your baggie outside to watch the ice melt. This is the liquid state of matter.
3. When the ice is completely melted, drop in an Alka-Seltzer tablet. Now you can see the gas state of matter. (Note-Eventually your baggie will pop open if you don’t unzip it yourself, so watch out for this!)

Our Fairytales
We have a few more to load, but these are our fairytales so far…
Voting for Class President
As part of our study on President’s Day, we held our own election for class president. Each student who wanted to run had to make a poster and prepare a short speech. Watch our video of speeches…
Congratulations goes to Audrey, our new class president!
I am very proud of all the students who were brave enough to make a speech in front of the class!
